Trooperstown, 28th Sept ‘08, National Trails Day
- Planner: Mary Healy
- Controller: David Healy
- Organiser: David Healy
Sept 28th is National Trails Day, we will have 3 easy courses for beginners. This event is suitable for all the family, all people, all ages, all abilities. From the absolute beginners to anyone who has tried orienteering before but hasn’t done more than one or a few events.
1. Short - Very Easy. All on forest roads. Very 'buggy' friendly.
2. Medium - Very Easy also but with a tiny bit off-road. Wet shoes.
3. Adventure - Also Easy but with more off-road. Wet & mucky shoes.
Any off-road will still be on tracks or along taped routes. So navigation will still be very easy.
All 3 courses are short, the longest is 3.0k. How long will it take you to go around your course? Well, that depends on what speed youre going at. An easy, relaxed walking pace would be about 15-20 mins per km on flattish paths. But dont hold us to that!!! Not if youre going to smell the flowers, admire the view, breathe the fresh air, pick blackberries, chase after the dog, wait for the dawdlers, play hide & seek behind the trees along the way.
There will be a number of club compasses to lend out to people. Maps will be provided at the event. General instructions: Club officials will be on hand to instruct anyone on how to read a map and use a compass.
Clothes to wear would be some shoes for the trails, and any clothes for exercising or walking in. If it is a rainy day, rain gear is advised. A change of shoes and socks will probably be needed after the Medium or Adventure course.
Bring a lunch or BBQ, to set up after the event beside the river at the carpark.
Get Out There, Have Fun and Enjoy!
